Freeing the Presses $17.95 Freeing the Presses offers a path-breaking inquiry into the theory and practice of freedom of the press at a critical time in the growing overlap between modern media and political discussion. Six political communication scholars draw upon history, sociology, political science, legal philosophy, and journalism to investigate whether the freedoms and privileges given to the news media and to reporters actually produce the results we expect. Their discussion covers past, present, and future media performance and engages a wide range of provocative questions: What understanding did the founders of the Constitution have of the press? Does the legal protection given to the press actually produce more free-wheeling news? Just how independent are the news media from political and other power centers? Must we accept a scurrilous, "unlovable" press if we are to have such independence? How will freedom of the press be changed by the new heady mix of mass-, middle-, and micromedia, and of citizen news-producers? Answers to these questions receive added perspective in an introductory essay by Timothy E. Cook and commentaries by four First Amendment experts. A book that will be welcomed by scholars, students, and anyone who relies on the freedom of the press in practice, Freeing the Presses addresses the important question of how best to pursue a media system that fulfills the demands of a democratic polity. |

Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. Lenticular Printing $53.63 Lenticular printing is a technology in which a lenticular lens is used to produce images with an illusion of depth, or the ability to change or move as the image is viewed from different angles. Examples of lenticular printing include prizes given in Cracker Jack snack boxes that showed flip and animation effects such as winking eyes, and modern airport advertising graphics that change their message depending on the viewing angle. This technology was created in the 1940s but has evolved in recent years to show more motion and increased depth. Originally used mostly in novelty items, lenticular prints are now being used as a marketing tool to show products in motion. Recent advances in largeformat presses have allowed for oversized lenses to be used in lithographic lenticular printing. 1869 Printing Press Fly Frame Original U.S. Patent #087,695 $1125 "Own this original, one-of-a-kind piece of 19th century American history, made available by the U.S. Patent Model Foundation, exclusively through The Times. In 1869, Theodore Mead, of Boston, submitted this model for an improved fly for printing presses, for paper to rest and slide on when the fly was in operation. He submitted this model in pursuit of a patent. With its wood frame and simple, bent-wires, it may not seem impressive to us, but R. Hoe & Co. of New York knew its value and snapped it up. This venerable company, establish in 1802, initially made wooden printing presses, later adding its saw-machine lines, and ultimately establishing itself as a foremost producer of iron printing presses, fostering myriad innovations that contributed to the rapid and efficient production of newspapers. Presented to the U.S. Patent Office by its hopeful inventor, this is the actual model that examiners relied upon to award this patent more than 130 years ago. All U.S. Patent models are from 1836 to the 1890s, and are approximately 12 or less inches square. Each of these rare artifacts is guaranteed authentic. As with any historical items from the 1800s, signs of age and wear are common and are considered part of a models charm. Each model comes with its original patent office tag or a replica tag, plus a copy of its patent drawings and papers printed on parchment and a certificate of authenticity with a fascinating background on patent model history.Comes with FREE Inventing America booklet, featuring Times coverage of inventors and innovators dating back to the newspaper's inception in 1851! For more history into the U.S. Patent's Office, click here.Ships in 5 7 days." |
