How Laser Printers Work
Laser printers print by involving a multi step process considered a mysterious activity. They use laser beams to print while an inkjet printer propels ink onto the paper. The inkjet printer cartridge are refillable once empty. Laser printers use toners filled with carbon black and a dry plastic powder. A toner refill is needed once these two materials are consumed. Laser printers compose a page in their memory then transfer it to paper. Graphics occupy more memories so one should get a laser printer with a large memory that can hold a page with any associated graphics. Before a computer sends data to the printer it queries to make sure the printer is ready. The data goes to the laser printer, which stores it. If the job sent is larger than the printer can accommodate, the printer uses its spool to feed the remaining job to the printer or the OS waits. Some laser printers have their own software and their print spooler normally takes over large jobs instead of the spooler in the OS.
Laser printers have aluminum cylinders. These cylinders, coated with photosensitive material called the drum. Each of the drums needs cleaning before undertaking the printing of a new job. The printer prepares the drum to receive the image. It does this by applying a charge of -600 volts to the drum surface. A varistor grid filters the negative charge such that the negative charge is uniformly distributed. Laser printers write the data from the printers’ memory to the drums. By shining precise lasers on the drum, electrical charges change in specific spots. Some areas on the drum surface are neutralized making the toner adhere to the drum.
Feed rollers in the laser printers draw the paper into the printer. The top of the paper feeds into the printer the same moment when the laser image on the drum rotates past it. At the same time, the toner is applied to the drum. Toners have plastic resin particles that melt hence producing images on paper. When the drum is passing by the cylinder, the toner clings to areas with lesser charges than it does.
The transfer corona applies+600 volts to the paper. The negatively charged toner jumps to the paper that has a positive charge. The paper then runs by a static charge eliminator. This reduces the paper’s positive charge. Laser printers have fuser rollers. The rollers heat the paper to melt the toner. The cleaning pad in contact with the roller helps keep the paper clean. The pressure roller is part of the fusing assembly. It presses against the fuser roller. The paper feeds between the two rollers with the imprinted images. They have built in sensors that check if the paper is in the right places. If the papers delay, a warning message is given.
Printing supplies such as a toner refill kit are important printer supplies as they are used in toner refill when the quality of work deteriorates. Other printer supplies include special felt-lined tools to clean corona lines. Compatible cartridges, recycled cartridges or remanufactured cartridges can be used in the printers.
